Jérémie Claes & Remy Dejans. Based in Brussels

Atelier Claes Dejans is a graphic design studio based in Brussels, founded by Jérémie Claes and Remy Dejans. The studio develops visual identities and bespoke projects, primarily within the cultural sector, combining typography, graphic design, motion design, web, and print.

Jérémie Claes graduated from the Atelier de Typographie at La Cambre. He specializes in type design, web design and development, as well as the creation of interactive digital tools. He has designed visual identities for the Musée du Livre in Brussels, the Belgian Art and Design Affair, and Woodcrafts and Textiles Future, for which he also developed interactive applications.

Remy Dejans graduated in visual arts from LUCA School of Arts in Ghent, following earlier studies in architecture at KUL. He specializes in motion design, spatial design, and photography. He has created identities for the Permeke Museum and the Sphinx Film Festival Weekend, as well as animations for Atelier Chora Architectes and S.M.A.K.

Encyclopedia of Diatoms

May 2022, 336 pages

Binding: Sahoko Yoshino
Paper: Munken Cream 80g
Cover: Red leather
Printing: Black and white (Magnetography)
Typeface: LL Bradford (Lineto)

A diatom (from the Neo-Latin diatoma) is a type of microalgae found in oceans, rivers, and soils around the world. Living diatoms are a major part of Earth's biomass. They produce about 20 to 50 percent of the planet's oxygen each year, absorb over 6.7 billion tons of silicon from the water, and make up nearly half of the organic matter in the oceans. The silica shells of dead diatoms contribute significantly to marine sediment. Each year, around 27 million tons of diatom shell dust from the Sahara Desert, especially the Bodélé Depression, are carried across the Atlantic by wind, helping to fertilize the entire Amazon Basin.

Type specimen tool for Lineto

Development of a custom interactive tool as part of a larger project for an interactive type specimen to be published on Lineto.
The tool is based on a variable typeface inspired by the work of Jurriaan Schrofer, designed by Pablo Desportes. It explores a font-driven image halftoning system, where typographic parameters directly affect image rendering and layout.
Conceived as an experimental environment, the tool includes internal-only parameters for experimentation and fine-tuning, with the goal of optimizing its public implementation within the interactive specimen for the release.

Research project carried out as part of the production of a variable font.

A collection of theoretical resources and personal experiments that try to identify, reproduce, and automate the process of cracks in typographic shapes caused by the sun.

Belgian Art & Design Affair

Custom Typeface for Belgian Art & Design Affair
BADAFF is a unique fair for collectible artworks and design objects that are designed between the boundaries of these two worlds. Bringing art and design closer together creates a unique symbiosis. Sometimes one, sometimes the other, usually in between.

All Ready Made

Variable Font Typewriter based on a grid inspired by the work of Jurriaan Schrofer. Each grid cell represents a letter. By manipulating the grid and the font variability, the user can generate or create new layouts. The user also has the ability to download the font files and their layouts.

Poetic Program — Image Processing as a System

2023, 304 pages
Binding: Sahoko Yoshino
Paper: Munken Cream 80g
Printing: Black and white (Magnetography)

What kinds of relationships can exist between poetry, natural forms, programming, and typography?
How can complex organic shapes be generated from a set of simple rules?
Through the study of organic structures in nature, how can we identify, extract, or model the systems that compose them, and then reproduce these systems using machines and algorithms to create new graphic forms?
How can image processing algorithms be used to generate new organic or typographic forms?
In what ways can randomness be used as a creative engine to guide the production of graphic signs within an algorithm or system?

Wittockiana (WIP)

Wittockiana — Musée des Arts du livre et de la reliure (WIP)
Web design + Web development, 2025-Now

The Wittockiana, also known as the Museum of Bookbinding and the Book Arts, is a museum located in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Brussels.

Named after its founder, the Wittockiana was established by Michel Wittock, who assembled over the course of his life an impressive collection of books, manuscripts, and autographs.

The Wittockiana is Brussels’ museum dedicated to the book arts and bookbinding. Its collection, comprising nearly 3,000 works, is made up of unique books: each bears its own material history, the testimony of an artist or craftsperson, a bookbinder, or the personal mark of its author.

Generative Typefaces

This research presents an experimental web-based generative typography tool that explores the intersection of image processing and type design. While most generative type systems rely on vector-based approaches, this project deliberately adopts a different methodology by focusing on bitmap-based algorithms.

By working at the pixel level rather than through Bézier curves, the tool investigates how image-processing filters can be used as generative mechanisms for typographic form. This shift in approach raises questions about how typographic structures behave when they are no longer defined by continuous vector paths, but instead by discrete pixel operations.

Variable Type Specimen Builder

Initially developed as part of a research project on variable fonts, Lumitype is a web-based tool designed to facilitate the creation of variable typographic specimens.

The tool offers a wide range of features, including file saving, video export, and the creation of multi-page specimens. It enables the production of dynamic and customizable typographic layouts, streamlining the documentation and presentation of variable typefaces.

A public release of a new version of the tool is currently under development, focusing on improved stability and expanded animation capabilities.
